Season 1

Season One (2001 – 2002)
The season's main plot revolves around an assassination attempt on Maryland Senator David Palmer, a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination, on the day of the California primary. The central character is Jack Bauer, a former Delta Force operator who is the Special Agent in Charge of the fictional Counter Terrorist Unit (CTU) in Los Angeles. Bauer becomes professionally as well as personally involved when his wife Teri and daughter Kim are kidnapped by the people behind the assassination.

The season is essentially divided into two acts:

1. The first act revolves around a mercenary group's efforts to control Jack Bauer and force him to kill Senator Palmer by kidnapping Bauer's wife and daughter. This culminates in Jack's successful rescue of his family.
2. In the second act, the masterminds behind the plot are revealed and continue with their plans to kill the Senator as well as the Bauer family.

Season Two (2002–2003)
The season's main plot follows the work of now-President David Palmer and agent Jack Bauer to stop terrorists from detonating a nuclear bomb in Los Angeles. Introduced into the situation is Kate Warner, a woman who ends up getting vital information related to CTU's mission.

Like Season One, this season can also be essentially broken into two acts:

1. The first act involves CTU attempting to stop a Middle Eastern terrorist cell from detonating a nuclear bomb in Los Angeles.
2. In the second act, Jack, Kate, and CTU try to prevent a misdirected retaliatory strike from the U.S. by exposing the real masterminds who let the terrorists acquire the bomb.

Season Three (2003 – 2004)
The season's main plot revolves around the threat of biological terrorism—a deadly virus being released in Los Angeles—while President Palmer is visiting to participate in a debate with the chief opponent in his re-election campaign.

Season Three can be broken essentially into three acts (although all three revolve around securing the virus):

1. CTU must stop a terrorist threat of releasing a deadly virus into the Los Angeles populace if drug kingpin Ramon Salazar is not released from jail.
2. Jack must intercept the virus as it is sold in a transaction in Mexico.
3. The real villain of the day is discovered and CTU must stop him from spreading the weaponized virus strain.

Season Four (2005)
Jack is now working for Secretary of Defense James Heller after being fired by CTU, caught up in an elaborate terrorist plot which involves both men and the daughter of Heller, Audrey Raines, who doubles as her father's chief policy assistant and Jack's lover (while separated from her husband). Jack must work with CTU and Erin Driscoll, the new Chief Director of CTU and the woman who fired him, to uncover what is happening. Again, one or more moles are revealed to be working inside CTU, aiding the terrorists.

Unlike previous seasons, which focused on a singular threat, multiple enemies, and conspiracies, this season is based around one main enemy, a terrorist named Habib Marwan who controls a series of Middle Eastern terrorist cells that launch a series of attacks against the United States. This was somewhat accidental; Marwan was originally intended to only appear in six episodes, but the producers were so impressed by Arnold Vosloo's performance that Marwan became the season's main villain, and stayed that way right up to the final hours of the season. During Season Five, however, there seems to be some implication that some of the masterminds behind the crisis in Day 5 may have been secretly involved in the incidents of Day 4.

Rather than two large acts, this season is divided into several smaller acts depending on what terrorist threat Marwan came up with.

1. The kidnapping and planned broadcast of the execution of the Secretary of Defense.
2. Nuclear power plants across America are sent into a forced meltdown.
3. Terrorists steal a stealth fighter to shoot down Air Force One.
4. Jack and Marwan scramble to get a hold of the nuclear football.
5. The terrorists steal and launch a nuclear missile.

Season Five (2006)
After the events in Season Four, Jack Bauer is now working as a day-to-day laborer at an oil refinery under the alias "Frank Flynn" in Mojave, California. Jack is renting a room north of Los Angeles from Diane Huxley, a single mother, and her 15-year-old son Derek.

Season Five is supposed to be a monumental day in the Logan presidency. He is scheduled to sign an anti-terrorism alliance treaty with Russian President Yuri Suvarov at his retreat in Hidden Valley, California. This is believed to be the motive behind most of the day's events, as the Russian terrorists (presumably Chechen, although this is never stated for sure), led by Vladimir Bierko, that carry out the day's attacks, believe the treaty will increase the suffering of their people.

The season can be subsequently broken into three major parts. 1) The framing of Jack Bauer for the death of David Palmer to distract from Terrorists obtaining Nerve Gas to be used on Russian soil 2) The terrorist retaliation by using the Nerve Gas on U.S. soil. 3) The plot to find and use evidence against President Logan for his involvment in the days attack.

Season 6

Season Six (2007)
After the events in season five and over the last 11 weeks before Day 6, the United States has been targeted coast-to-coast in a series of suicide bombings including a train bombing in Atlanta, casino bombing in Las Vegas, park bombing in Phoenix, hospital bombing in Detroit, a mall bombing in Baltimore, office building bombing in San Jose, hotel bombing in Chicago, a taxi bomb in New York City, bus bombing in Los Angeles, bombing at the airport in St. Louis and street bombs in San Antonio, Milwaukee, and Portland, Oregon. President Wayne Palmer has negotiated the release of Jack Bauer from a Chinese prison, under "high-price" terms that have not been revealed. A man by the name of Hamri Al-Assad is believed to be behind the attacks. A man named Abu Fayed agrees to give the U.S. the location of Assad in exchange for $25 million and Jack Bauer. Jack is turned over, but Fayed tells Jack that he is behind the attacks, not Assad. In fact, Assad is trying to stop them. Jack escapes, and tries to warn the President before Assad is killed, but Palmer refuses to abort the air attack. Jack quickly rescues Assad shortly before the attack.

Assad and Jack then work together, stopping a suicide bombing in the Los Angeles subway and tracking a suspect that they thought would lead them to Fayed, but didn't. Instead, he leads them to a computer that contained information that said that Fayed is planning to detonate nuclear weapons in the U.S. Curtis Manning appears and prepares to take Assad back to CTU. Jack then finds out that Curtis wants revenge against Assad and Jack is forced to kill Curtis to save Assad. Distraught at being forced to kill his friend, Jack collapses and vomits. He calls Bill Buchanan at CTU and quits.
